Dogs and cats can have many different types of cancer that can affect almost any part of their bodies just like humans. In a nutshell, cancer is the term used to describe uncontrolled growth of a group of cells within the body. These cells intrude on and destroy neighboring tissues. This group of cells is called a tumor.
In dogs with cancer and cats with cancer, tumors can either be malignant or benign. Malignant tumors continue to grow and invade other cells in the body. Benign tumors do not grow in an unlimited, aggressive way that malignant tumors do. Benign tumors can typically be removed with a good outcome. However malignant tumors require a greater depth of care in dogs with cancer and cats with cancer.

The following are common cancers in dogs and cats:
- Skin cancer;
- Mammary cancer;
- Lymphoma;
- Cancer of the mouth; and
- Bone cancer.
Common Signs of Cancer in Dogs and Cats
Common signs and symptoms of cancer in dogs and cats include:
- Tumors or lumps;
- Changes in bowel or bladder habits;
- Sores that do not heal;
- Drooling or difficulty swallowing;
- Unusual bleeding or discharge;
- Changes in breathing (cough, rapid breathing, excessive panting, etc.);
- Abdominal distention;
- Lameness;
- Unexplained weight loss; and
- Changes in behavior, temperament, activity level or habits.
Diagnosing and Treating Dogs and Cats with Cancer
To diagnose cancer in dogs and cancer in cats, a veterinary specialist will typically do a thorough physical examination. He will then order additional diagnostic veterinary tests depending on what is needed for that particular patient. These may include radiology, laboratory analysis, CT scans and histopathology.
New treatments are emerging all the time for dogs with cancer and cats with cancer. There are several ways in which a veterinary specialist can treat dogs with cancer and cats with cancer. The most common treatments include:
- Surgery;
- Radiation therapy;
- Hyperthermia;
- Photodynaic therapy;
- Chemotherapy; and
- Gene therapy.
