Urinary Bladder Problems
The urinary system is responsible for eliminating waste from the body. It includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Dogs and cats can have urinary and bladder problems much like humans.
Common Urinary Problems in Dogs and Cats
Some common urinary problems in dogs and cats include:
- Bladder stones;
- Cushing's disease;
- Ectopic ureter;
- Incontinence;
- Kidney disease;
- Renal displasia; and
- Urinary development abnormality.
Diagnosing Urinary Problems in Dogs and Cats
Dogs or cats with urinary problems may show signs such as:
- Blood in their urine;
- Frequent urination;
- Urinating very small amounts;
- Increased water consumption;
- Increase or decrease in appetite;
- Abdominal enlargement;
- Vomiting;
- Weight loss;
- Low energy (lethargy); and/or
- Diarrhea.
To diagnose a urinary problem, a veterinary specialist may call for detailed laboratory work, a urinalysis, an ultrasound or other diagnostic veterinary tests. Treatments can range from medical therapy to surgery depending on the condition.
